I’ve told you the importance of having an evening routine and what mine looks like; now I’m going to get into my morning routine. I truly believe that the key to a great day is starting it off with a great morning. And no, a great morning is not about having a big cup of coffee. I don’t even like coffee so it’s not even apart of my morning. So how do I have a good morning without coffee you ask? Well, it’s all about having a morning routine.
The great thing about a morning routine is, it can be modeled to fit your personal needs. It can be as detailed or as simple as you need it to be. You can create a timeline so you know what you’re supposed to be doing at all times, if you like that guidance. If you prefer a to-do list with the specific things you need to accomplish in the morning, create a checklist so you can cross off as you go without missing an item. Eventually it becomes second nature and you don’t need a reminder.
What should you include in your morning routine? Well, it’s all about you. What do you enjoy? How do you like to exercise your body and mind? What habits are you trying to cultivate? What energizes you? What makes you happy? What motivates you and prepares you to focus? These are all things to keep in mind when creating your morning routine.
My morning routine starts with brushing my teeth and doing my morning skincare routine–you can read all about that here. Next I will take my vitamins and daily morning medications. Honestly it takes a while to get all my vitamins down so as I’m working on those, I start getting dressed for a walk with Sandy, my beagle baby. If there is one thing in my routine that gives me the most energy and focus, it’s going for a morning walk.
After a quick mile walk around the neighborhood, I will grab a morning drink before heading upstairs to my office. I’m not a coffee drinker, my caffeine source is green tea. In the winter I drink it hot and in the summer I drink it cold. Bigelow Green Tea with Lemon is my favorite green tea right now. To make iced green tea, I steep a few bags in a large tin of water overnight.
My office space also happens to be my glam room and it includes a zen corner, so it’s a room that makes me really happy. It’s very easy to get comfortable and focus. I start with picking out a quote for the day to help set the tempo. Then I review my calendars and write down the appointments and meetings I have for the day. Next I set my goals and write my to-do’s. I have 2 columns for this: work and personal. Working from home allows me the opportunity to tackle some home chores during the day and it’s beneficially for me to see everything I need to do and how busy my day looks so I can plan accordingly.
After my day is set and planned I will fill out a page in my CGD London Self Love Journal. I like to do this while sitting in my zen corner because then I can transition into my final step of the morning, meditate. I meditate for 15 minutes with AirPods in and an Apple Music meditate playlist going while sipping my green tea. Closing with meditate really clears my mind and allows me to go into work with as much focus as possible. Read more about my meditation journey here.
