Favs and Flops from August 2023

What is up? I am back with my favs and flops from another month. The theme of this year continues to be travel and concerts. I’ve already fit enough of both in for this year but we’ve still got 4 months left and I’m certainly not done yet. So let’s get into the best and worst of August 2023.

  • Orlando, FL Trip – My husband and I met a bunch of our friends down in Orlando to surprise a friend for his 35th birthday. We stayed at this great airbnb with so many bedrooms and bathrooms as well as a pool. It was great for our group! We drove down on a Thursday and stayed until Sunday. On Friday, the girls went to Universal Studios for the day while the boys spent the morning golfing a Disney course. I’ve hadn’t been to Universal Studios since 2021 so I got to ride the new Velocicoaster, which was fantastic! On Saturday, we all headed to Epcot to drink around the world. I got these cute drink passports from Etsy that my husband and I used to record what we drank. They were great but I didn’t end up completing the assignment; it was too hot. I switched to water about 1/3 of the way through–I can no longer hang. Earlier in the day we had the chance to ride the new Guardians of the Galaxy roller coaster, that was hands down one of the coolest rides! Overall the trip was a great little get away with the only fail being I left an amazon maxi dress in the closet at the airbnb, oh well.
  • COVID – FLOP! – The big flop of the month was definitely Covid hitting our household. My husband was down for the count, thankfully I didn’t end up getting it.
  • Dirty Heads concert – I will be honest I didn’t know who the Dirty Heads were when our friends invited us to see them. I ended up realizing I know their song Vacation, but sadly, that was it. The venue was the Coca-Cola Roxy, which I’d never been to. It was a great venue, located at the Battery in Marietta, Ga. I had a great time despite not knowing many of the songs. The crowd was great and I think I can officially say that I do like concerts. I just get crowd anxiety and frustrated when I can’t see.
  • Counting Crows concert – Not one, but two concerts this month, brining the total for the year to 4. The venue for this concert was new to me again, Ameris Bank Amphitheatre in Alpharetta, Ga, about 25 minutes from my house. I’d always wanted to see the Counting Crows live with my mom and I finally crossed that off my bucket list this year. We were outdoors but it was later in the evening so it wasn’t crazy hot. We sang and had drinks and it was such a good time.
  • Betty Buzz Mixers & 21 Seeds Tequila – I’ve been on a tequila kick lately, maybe it’s because I just started drinking it. I was never a fan of tequila but in 2021 when I was in Austin, TX I was determined to drink margaritas and like them. It worked. I’m a chilled, silver girl. I recently found a drink I love! I mix 21 Seeds Cucumber Jalapeno with the Betty Buzz Sparkling Lemon Lime Soda. It’s the perfect low calorie drink that doesn’t lack in taste. Try it out, it’s very good!
  • Succession – Succession was such a good show, oh my goodness!! My husband and I started and finished all 4 seasons pretty quickly. I was hooked immediately, which is not typical for me. My favorite character was cousin Greg for sure! Succession is about the very wealthy (think billions of dollars) Roy family, with the patriarch, Logan, owning a large media company. The entire series is around who is going to be taking over Waystar/Roy Co., the media company. Logan has 4 children, but really only 3 in the running to take over (sorry Connor). Throughout the 4 seasons we watch as they (Kendal, Shiv, and Roman) plan their respective takeovers, and at times teaming up. There are also those outside the family and higher up in the company who could be in the running, as well as other rich businessmen. But we don’t see who takes over until the very final episode. The writing and acting are top tier, which make sense because it’s won plenty of Emmy’s. My favorite part of the show was 100% Greg and Tom’s friendship, they were the comedic relief at the perfect times. You can find Succession streaming on Max.
  • Super Mario Bros Movie – We caught this movie when it was released on Peacock soon after being in theaters. As an adult, I’m very picky about cartoon/kids films. When I was a kid I loved them all, but it’s very different now so I go in with low expectations. Almost immediately I was a fan of the nostalgia factor with the music and how part of it was made to look as if you were watching someone play Super Mario Bros. Peach was a badass, not a damsel in distress, which was the perfect update to the story. Instead of Peach, Luigi needed saving. The movie was funny and if you played the game as a kid, or adult, you’ll probably enjoy it too. Side note: Jack Black’s “Peaches” is forever stuck in my head.
  • Emily the Criminal – Emily the Criminal is about a young woman who gets into the high risk world of credit card fraud and it escalates from there. The story is wild and Aubrey Plaza really shows how dynamic of an actor she is. The ending was very good and perfect for the story, in my opinion. It’s a must watch! You can find Emily the Criminal on Netflix.
  • Fire Island – Fire Island is about 4 friends who vacation at their friend’s house on Fire Island, known for it’s LGBTQIA+ culture. The film touches on some important topics but all in all it’s a cute rom-com that will have you appreciating your friends and your significant other. You can find Fire Island on Hulu.

That’s it for the month of August. I think being back in Disney World after almost 8 years was my favorite part of the month. There’s nothing quite like being in that environment. Be sure to share your favorites and flops for the month in the comments below.
